Tenuta Maiano is the realization of an idea born to follow the primordial rhythm of nature, an experience that started from the conductor Gianfranco Nigi and is continuing and evolving with the contributing notes of Stefano Nigi and Mauro Araneo.
A sip of nature…
The company and it’s story
Gianfranco Nigi’s passion and love for nature brought him to start an ambitious project of organic agriculture.
Ever since early 1984 it was clear that Gianfranco Nigi had a tight bond to the concept of organic production. Ever since the conceptualization phase it was clear that organic agriculture was a sustainable project in the region of Montespertoli, circumstances that led to results that exceeded his expectations. He had the right intuition, like that of musicians who play blindly. The next step was to make the abstract project into a concrete one.
In 2000 the opportunity to take a step forward presented itself when Gianfranco decided to create ‘Tenuta Maiano’ after having secured his understanding and experience in the field of organic production. He therefore invests in his first hectars of land containing both vineyards and olive groves in San Quirico in Collina. His objective at this point in time was to have a strategy of diversification by exploring new ‘ terroir’. Thanks to this strategy he acquired more vineyards in Scansano where he now produces the ‘Morellino di Scansano D.O.C.G.’
Today Tenuta Maiano has 55 hectars of vineyards and about 4500 olive trees, all these scattered around the Montespertoli area. The operational side of the enterprise is effected over three cellars ( two for fermentation and one for storage) and has two land management locations. Thanks to its experience, Tenuta Maiano reduces to use modern products, chemicals and pesticides, by instead taking advantage of the ancient agricultural techniques of the area.
These copper and sulphur based treatments, fertilisation called ‘sovescio’ along with organic manure, specialized land work, and the fight against parasites through organic means are the methods which even if costly, grant the final consumer with a more genuine tasting and unique product.
Nature’s divine rhythms are our own.
Tenuta Maiano on a different playing field.
In a world where all run fast, there is a snail that in small steps carries on a philosophy with determination and experience. The Tenuta Maiano logo, the snail, describes the link with the earth, the stability, the security. It represents the slow motion: as for the harvest you have to respect the rhythm of nature. The snail is also the symbol of emails addresses, so a technological one. The two ways can today work together and interact. Love for tradition and creative innovation present the pure essence of Tenuta Maiano.
Tenuta Maiano rhythm carries the historical knowledge together with the modern ones. Both are a winning choice that transforms the company in a “different kind of music.”

As Hemingway said, “Wine is one of the most civilized things in the world and one of the most natural things of the world that has been brought to the greatest perfection, and it offers a greater range for enjoyment and appreciation than, possibly, any other purely sensory thing.”
A prove of this is Scansano Terroir. Scansano of Scansano, GR, in the Maremma region of coastal Tuscany, which has an ancient but obscure tradition of winemaking. It has more than 270 km² surface on the north eastern side of the Albegna and Fiora hills, up to some part of the Ombrone valley. Hills, sea, mountains, sunny days, make Sacnasano a very generous land for quality wines. On January 6th, 1978, Morellino became a DOC and in 2007 a DOCG. Today iti s a very renown brand. Tenueta Maiano is in Preselle with 15Ha of vineyards.
From 2012 Tenuta Maiano wines are organically certified.
Organic Agriculture is a production system that ruled by the EU regualtion 834/07, and its application CE 889/08, and in Italy by the D.M. 220/95. No pesticide, chemical fertilisers or herbicides are used. GMO are not used.
Organic Agriculture is a production system that sustains the health of soils, ecosystems and people. It relies on ecological processes, biodiversity and cycles adapted to local conditions, rather than the use of inputs with adverse effects. Organic Agriculture combines tradition, innovation and science to benefit the shared environment and promote fair relationships and a good quality of life for all involved. Farmers can only use approved products.
